The Chief of Naval Operat
The Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Vern Clark, smiles after a Sailor asks for permission to be CNO for a day. Adm. Clark was aboard USS La Salle (AGF 3) addressing Sailors assigned to Commander Sixth Fleet staff, La Salle and the Naval Support Activity, Gaeta, at an All Hands call. The CNO spoke with the Sailors about the importance of their overseas service in and around the Mediterranean. "We have to have a Navy that's out and about," Clark told them. James, I walked down the beach to The Palmira. That's yours and Sue's room at the top of the stairs. This, and the next picture, shows the storm erosion on their beach. It's about 6' lower than when we stayed there.

We stopped at a fishing village at the NW end of the island for some cold drinks at a local cafe. That's Cambodia across the water. Phu Quoc Island is actually closer to Cambodia than to Vietnam. I guess they have fought over it several times over the centuries. As close to Cambodia as it is, Cambodians can't enter the country via Phu Quoc. It's not a port of entry for anyone.

Phu Quoc is a mountainous island that's covered in rain forest. The whole interior is government property and a preserve. Not too many of these in Nam. During the war there was a POW camp run by the ARVN's on the island, so it saw virtually no fighting in it's interior. It's one of the few places you can go on a hike in the jungle and have a good chance of spotting monkeys and other wildlife. Also, not having to worry about left behind booby traps or ordinance. We were hoping to spot some monkeys on this short jaunt from the car. Didn't see any, but it was a beautiful spot none the less.

Don't know if you notice how much weight I put on after June's surgery of sucking down pain pills and steroids! I'm slowly working that weight off!!! Sheesh! Still have that "lean" in this picture from ankle stuff...thank God, that's gone now!
