A member of the boarding team from USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60)assists a crewmember aboard a Thai merchant ship in opening a cargo bay for inspection during Maritime Interception Operations (MIO). These boarding team members are highly-trained personnel. Boarding teams have been conducting Maritime Interception Operations (MIO), searching for contraband cargo aboard merchant ships in the area to enforce UN sanctions against Iraq. MIO is a coalition effort enforcing United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) imposed against the government of Iraq following the 1991 Gulf War. The U.N. prohibits cargo originating from Iraq and any imports not accompanied by a U.N. authorization letter.
