Saturday, April 5, 2003, Iraqi Kurds working with a MAG (Mine Advisory Group) search for landmines in territory newly acquired by Kurds and U.S. forces after a defensive retreat by Iraqi government forces south of Irbil, northern Iraq, on Saturday. After four decades of intermittent conflict, the mountainous region of northern Iraq is littered with millions of mines and unexploded bombs which have killed nearly 4,500 people in the last decade.
