Valley students get a personal view of war from Vietnam veterans

LONDON MILLS -- For most students, Veteran's Day is simply a day off
from school, perhaps a short ceremony in a gymnasium or auditorium
listening to local American Legion or VFW members and singing the
"Star Spangled Banner."

For students in the Valley School District, however, a pre-Veteran's
Day visit by two former soldiers serving in the Vietnam War gave
Veteran's Day a more intensely human aspect.

Darrell Dickson of Paragould, Ark., and his patrol were ambushed in
the late afternoon of Feb. 10, 34 years ago on the Rach Dong Nhien
River. Another soldier, Waldon "Lee"Gibbs of Milledgeville, Ill.,
braved Viet Cong fire to make sure all the others were taken to
safety, including one who had fallen in the water.
