The South Has Indeed Risen Again!

I went for a walk out in the country were in I was raised in Eastern Oregon this morning. This is the dry semi arid desert area. The low lands to have a few small spring creeks and the farmers water by wells and irrigation canals. But, its desert. However as I was taking my walk I came across a possum which had been run over. Shock of all Shocks, possum are not native to the Pacific Northwest. Back in the 1920's a group of Southerns from North Carolina [Tar Heels] moved into the town of Darrington to work in the logging camps. They brought possum with them and some escaped ( so the story goes ). Now Western Washington is plagued with Possum. The highways are littered with the flattened bodies of possum. All from a small bunch brought in by some Tar Heels nearly 90 years ago. But now my sacred home is also being plagued by this creature from the South. Those Rebels have found a way to bring us Yankees to our knees, send in the possum.

....possum, the other white meat. Try them with a nice, slightly chillled Zinfandel, vintage 2004. I'll wager that the original batch were brought to your area by some po' white folks, who couldn't afford to go into town and buy a nice chicken for dinner!

Keith, I'll make you a deal: let's trade critters! If you'll come down here and capture all the armadillos that have been plaguing my landscaping efforts, I'll come up there and rid your land of possums. (Gotta be careful with these armadillos, as they are the only animal known to carry Hansen's disease, better known as leprosy for those folks down in Rio Linda.) I've done a bit of noctural game management by walking around the property at night with a good strong flashlite, and a Ruger .22 single action revolver; body count so far is 5, with one really pesky sort who has eluded my efforts.

I've had reputable folks tell me that Dachshunds are HELL on armadillos...that they will dig them out and even go down their tunnels after them.

Be careful when you shoot though...them lil dogs are FAST!

Possums are smart. Well maybe not. They have a pretty smile Well maybe not. Well just look at then as an organic renewable souce of Frisbees. They make wonderful dog chew toys.

Keith,I got this recipe from THE source-one of them Darrington Tarheels give it to me hisself:

After you`ve cleaned and skinned the rascal,go out to the kindling pile and select a nice cedar plank about 18"x18".Put the possum on the plank and season him with lots of salt,pepper,rosemary and thyme and shove the whole nine yards in a 350* oven for 1 hour and 20 minutes.Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes..



Use the possum for crab bait and eat the cedar plank.
