Default Happier Days

That's only 51 years ago!
Comments made in the year 1955:

"I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20."

"Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2000 will only buy a used one."

"If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous."

"Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?"

"If they raise the minimum wage to $1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store."

"When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage."

"Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail hair cuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls."

"I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying 'damn' in 'Gone With The Wind,' it seems every new movie has either "hell" or "damn" in it.

"I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century They even hav e some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas."

"Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the president."

"I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now."

"It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet."

"It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work."

"Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more; those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat."

"I'm just afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business."
"Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people ?
"The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on."

"There is no sense going to Vancouver anymore for a weekend. It costs nearly $15 a night to stay in a hotel."

"No one can afford to be sick any more; $35 a day in the hospital is too rich for my blood."

"If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it."

Everything old is new again. Haven't you been watching styles? Bell bottoms, hip huggers......etc. etc.

Most things are relative BUT my Daddy and Momma bought "the new house" in 1963 at double his income. What it's worth now, I could not buy at double my income and I make more in a year then he ever did. Just an example. Another.....my first car was brand new and had every option but AC. (took away horse power). It was 2,800 and I was making $265 a month. The payment was 60 a month and with gas, insurance and everything else, it was EXPENSIVE! Young GI's today at the hospital look at me like I'm crazy when I try and explain it to them.

I do like the "old days" better.

Benjamin Franklin once said "what disturbs me is the fact law enforcers is constantly telling the American People on the streets of our beloved city of Philadelphia what they can and can't do with their horse and wagon. What they're going to do next ? Try to tell the people how fast they can travel with their wagons" ?

Hey Guy's time marches on. The cost of living - wages and health care - profit margins for those who invest - It's no wonder how come things cost what they do.

Dad's wages back then were about $55 to $65 take home so a car costing two thousand was quite a chunk. The nickle ice cream cone now cost a whopping dollar in most cases.

Gas I recall was about 27 cents a gallon. Smokes were a quarter and on the side of the pack you got back 3 pennies and that was from a vending machine. OLD you bet I'm getting more mileage each year.

Amazing things have happened to make our life a little better and those are things we have to look into. Life became a little easier for both men and women but now I wonder just how many folks today could actually feed themselves if they had to.

We've all grown up seeing some dreadfull but yet some marvelous things in our lives and our kids and grandkids will see many more things. We can only hope that the current issues we are seeing today are not around in their futures.

Reminiscing is often times nice to reflect on but we all move on. I was told once a long time ago - those who live in the past live in a world of their own. Time never slows but rather as we get older seems to move even faster.

I try to take each day as best I can and hope that the next day comes and soforth. It will stop for each of us someday and you better believe - life will keep moving on and on.
