The ammunition ship USNS Shasta (T-AE 33) transfers ordnance to USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70)during an early morning replenishment operation at sea. Shasta is one of seven ammunition ships operated by Military Sealift Command provide underway replenishment of all types of ammunition. Additionally, these ships will frequently assist with the transfer of ammunition between weapons storage and maintenance facilities worldwide. Military Sealift Command ships are crewed by civilian marines, employees of the Department of the Navy. The MSC fleet allows the U.S. Navy to operate where needed, when needed, and for as long as needed. U.S. Navy photo by Lt. Cmdr. Bob Meeker.
