"SEASONS"

The verdant days of Spring
when all the birds begin to sing,
confirms Winter's death and
allows us all to catch our
breath.
New leaves begin to appear,
now there, now here.
Colorful berries decorate the
bushes as an artist moves
his brushes of texture
and color.
Birds are nesting. kittens are
resting in the sun as puppy dogs
increase their run in the
sun.
Wives and husbands prepare
to grow their gardens of fruits
and veggies and flowers
fair, in the fragrant and
warming air.
The lengthening rays of the
sun opens the door to Summer
when shade is the prime
commodity
in the season's market.
The warming sun gives rise to
growth of all planted things,
and fruition comes of age to
planted corn and beans,
which mark the scene of
maturity, and young wives
reveal a swelling of their torsos
for bringing new life into the
world
as it goes on turning round the
sun in its seasonal run.
New life is all about,
within the house and
without.
Summer is a friend with little
wind. much hot air and
showers
which nourish all the flowers
on Mother Earth.
When the milk of Mother Earth
begins to wane, all the
Summer flowers respond with
bowed heads and blossoms
fading from red to brown, and
then dried blossoms falling
down.
The shortening days and the
angle of the sun's rays
give way to days of Fall.
Leaves chatter in the wind and
cooler air descends from
a northern clime.
Wild geese and Mallards galore
are in the air, charting their
courses to Southern shores.
They stop to rest and eat a bit
as they journey on their way
to the Gulf, where they'll
be warm enough with their
young, who make their first flight
from northern places where
they were hatched.
The colorful scenery changes
below their flyways
turning greens to orange brown,
which they clearly see as
they look down
from their places up in the sky.
Humans envy those who
spread their wings and fly.
Farmers bring their wares
to town---pumpkins so
colorful and round, from which
Thanksgiving pies are made,
or Halloween faces with candles
inside,
giving the children pride!
The falling leaves reveal skeleton
trees, humbled at their nakedness
until a new Spring gives them
dress again.
The winds from the polar region
make their flight,
both day and night,
to a warmer clime, bringing
Winter-time and glistening
snow,
everywhere they go.
Coats and hats and thick warm
socks are the way to go, when it's
cold outside with crusted snow.
But warm it is inside with
glowing fireplaces and cheerful
faces round about.
A time for reading books and
decorating for Christmas
looks,
when the world affords more
cheer in giving from the heart.
The heart needs a season
in which to reflect
God's grace
to the human race,
bringing smiles and such to
most every face.
The New Year, with resolutions
to be made and broken,
affords a calendar token
of Winter's coming end.
Then, with the circuit complete,
Spring comes again,
bringing with it the
pruning knife of time, to mark
us all as older and, hopefully,
wiser in our course.

THE BACKROADS

Now the backroads are
the roads
that carried yesterday's
loads.

At times the backroads
are lonely
for there are few travelers,
often, you only!

If you traverse the lonely
road
there is no one to help
carry your load.

You must be strong of
back and heart,
having perseverance
from the start.

The veteran of many wars
is lonely too,
for few walk with him,
his mind to pursue.

The minds of old vets
travel the backroads too,
Remembering the yesterdays,
when they paid their due.

The spark of patriotism
still fills their soul,
but backs are weak
and heavy is their load!

Nightmares come as
he sleeps by the road,
so weary is he
from carrying his load!

His eyes depict
that thousand yard stare,
from seeing things
that once were there.

Yes, there are still backroads
and loneliness in his,
though the war is gone
but not his fears.

Come, my veteran friend
I will walk beside you
and listen to your stories
for I have been there too.

Few there are none who
seem to care
about old veterans
traveling from here
to there!

heavy is the load,
and long is the way
when old veterans
lie down alone today.

There is another time,
in another sphere
when tired old warriors
are no longer here!

Standing on the Edge of Today

Standing on the edge of today
watching time slip away,
I'm looking for a tomorrow
wherein there is no sorrow.

As each new day appears
I see only fears;
for this thing called PTSD
encompasses me with tears!

For some sixty years
since World War Two,
the Mares of the night
have paid their due.

By standing on the edge of today
I shall see a tomorrow
where angels dance an sing
and their day I shall borrow!
