1863:
Confederate forces on their way to Gettysburg clash with Union troops at the Second Battle of Winchester, Virginia.
1864: The bulk of the Army of the Potomac begins moving towards Petersburg, Virginia, precipitating a siege that lasted for more than nine months. 1915: The French are repulsed at Souchez. 1916: Canadians retake positions lost at Ypres on June 2nd. 1918: The First Battle of Lassigny ends. 1940: Paris is evacuated as the Germans advance on the city. 1943: German spies land on Long Island, New York, and are soon captured. 1944: Germany launches 10 of its new V1 rockets against Britain from a position near the Channel coast. They prove to be less than devastating. 1949: Installed by the French, Bao Dai enters Saigon to rule Vietnam. 1951: U.N. commander General Mathew Ridgways Joint Strategic Plans and Operations Group (JSPOG) discussed with him four options to carry Eighth Army above Line KANSAS so that this line would not be lost in any withdrawal required by cease-fire arrangements. |
