This Day in History
1863: The Battle of Chancellorsville begins in Virginia.

1877: President Rutherford B. Hayes withdraws all Federal troops from the South, ending Reconstruction.

1898: At Manila Bay in the Philippines, the U.S. Asiatic Squadron destroys the Spanish Pacific fleet in the first battle of the Spanish-American War.

1944: The Messerschmitt Me 262, the first combat jet, makes its first flight.

1968: In the second day of battle, U.S. Marines, with the support of naval fire, continue their attack on a North Vietnamese Division at Dai Do.

1972: North Vietnamese troops capture Quang Tri City, the first provincial capital taken during their ongoing offensive. The fall of the city effectively gave the communists control of the entire province of Quang Tri. As the North Vietnamese prepared to continue their attack to the south, 80 percent of Hues population, already swollen by 300,000 refugees, fled to Da Nang to get out of the way.
