Operations

Served as one of USAFE?s fighter wings with a commitment to NATO. Operated a special aerobatic team, the "Sky Blazers," c. Jun?Nov 1953 and Jul 1954?Oct 1956. Equipped with very few aircraft, Feb 1972?Jul 1974. Converted to F?111F aircraft in 1977. Continued commitment to NATO as a nuclear, conventional, mobility, and quick reaction conventional force. Participated in the air raid on Tripoli, Libya, 15/16 April 1986, in retaliation for that country?s sponsorship of terrorist attacks. Deployed wing?s fighter squadrons and other personnel to Saudia Arabia, Aug 1990?May 1991. During the war against Iraq, squadron pilots struck bridges, tanks, and bunkers. Deployed aircrews and F?111?s to Turkey, Sep 1991?Jun 1992, flying air suppression missions to enforce Iraq?s compliance with U.N. treaty terms. Transitioned to F?15E aircraft, Feb?Dec 1992, and made plans to resume deployments to Turkey.

This Day in History
1863: The Battle of Chancellorsville begins in Virginia.

1877: President Rutherford B. Hayes withdraws all Federal troops from the South, ending Reconstruction.

1898: At Manila Bay in the Philippines, the U.S. Asiatic Squadron destroys the Spanish Pacific fleet in the first battle of the Spanish-American War.

1944: The Messerschmitt Me 262, the first combat jet, makes its first flight.

1968: In the second day of battle, U.S. Marines, with the support of naval fire, continue their attack on a North Vietnamese Division at Dai Do.

1972: North Vietnamese troops capture Quang Tri City, the first provincial capital taken during their ongoing offensive. The fall of the city effectively gave the communists control of the entire province of Quang Tri. As the North Vietnamese prepared to continue their attack to the south, 80 percent of Hues population, already swollen by 300,000 refugees, fled to Da Nang to get out of the way.
