Laura Reed, a 24-ton auxiliary schooner, was built in 1895 at Noank, Connecticut. Chartered by the Navy in November 1917, she was commissioned the next month as USS Laura Reed. Based at New Haven, Connecticut, during World War I, she was employed by the Navy as a patrol craft and as a training vessel for the Yale University Naval Unit. Laura Reed was returned to her owner in January 1919.
