The S.S. Manta, a 3800-ton cargo ship, was built at Chicago, Illinois, in 1916 for the Clyde Steamship Company. The U.S. Navy chartered her for World War I service, placing her in commission in December 1917 as USS Manta (ID # 2036). After about six months' operations as a Naval Overseas Transportation Service cargo ship, she made two voyages transporting mines to Europe. Damaged by a storm in late October 1918, she had to be towed to Norfolk, Virginia, for repairs. USS Manta was decommissioned in March 1919 and returned to her owner.
