Maysie, a 92-foot motor boat, was built in 1899 at Astoria, Long Island, New York, for use as a yacht. During her years as a pleasure craft she was also named Verano and Laurena. She was acquired by the Navy in 1917, converted to a patrol vessel and placed in commission as USS Maysie (SP-930) in February 1918. Following World War I service in the New York City area, she was decommissioned and returned to her owner in December 1918.
