USS Menominee, a 1240-ton Cherokee class ocean tug, was built at San Francisco, California. Commissioned in September 1942, she served in the southern Pacific in 1942-44 and was redesignated ATF-73 in May 1944. During the remainder of the Pacific war, Menominee provided tug and salvage services in the Palaus, Philippines and Ryukyus war zones and at advanced fleet bases in the western and southern Pacific. After supporting post-war minesweeping activities in the East China sea, she returned to the United States in late 1945. Decommissioned in November 1946, USS Menominee remained in the Pacific Reserve Fleet until January 1961, when she was transferred to the Indonesia. Renamed Rakata, she was active in the Indonesian Navy until 1990, when she was placed in reserve.
