USS Oneida, a 150-ton yacht, was built at Bath, Maine, in 1896 for civilian use. Under the name Illawara, she was acquired by the Navy in April 1898 for Spanish-American War service and renamed Oneida. Inactive from 1898 to 1912, she was then recommissioned as a training ship and later had other duties. She was sold in 1915.

Oneida was reacquired in June 1917 for Navy use during World War I and was named SP-509. She was returned to her owner in December 1918.
