USS Sacramento, a 2100-ton steam screw sloop built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, New Hampshire, was commissioned in January 1863. Her initial service was on the blockade off North Carolina. Early in 1864, she was sent to cruise in European waters, where she remained until mid-1865. Sacramento was then overhauled and ordered to duty off Asia. She departed the U.S. in late 1866 and proceeded to her station by way of Africa and India. On 19 June 1867, while off Madras, India, Sacramento ran aground on a shallow offshore bar and was lost.
