Texan, an 8615 gross ton freighter, was built at Camden, New Jersey, in 1902 for commercial employment. She was acquired by the U.S. Navy in March 1918 and placed in commission as USS Texan (ID # 1354). As a unit of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, she made three round-trip voyages to France during the remaining months of World War I and another soon after the 11 November Armistice. Beginning in January 1919 Texan was used to bring American veterans home from the former European war zone. She was decommissioned in August 1919 and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board.
