Organized 1 July 1838 as a detachment of recruits at Detroit, Michigan

Designated 5 July 1838 as Company A, 8th Infantry (concurrently constituted in the Regular Army)

Consolidated in May 1869 with Company A, 33d Infantry (see ANNEX), and consolidated unit designated as Company A, 8th Infantry

(8th Infantry assigned 17 December 1917 to the 8th Division; relieved 24 March 1923 from assignment to the 8th Division and assigned to the 4th Division [later redesignated as the 4th Infantry Division])

Inactivated 25 February 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina

Activated 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California

Reorganized and redesignated 1 April 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battle Group, 8th Infantry, and remained assigned to the 4th Infantry Division (organic elements concurrently constituted and activated)

Reorganized and redesignated 1 October 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry

Inactivated 10 April 1970 at Fort Lewis, Washington

Activated 13 September 1972 at Fort Carson, Colorado

This Day in History
1862: Admiral David Farragut captures New Orleans a day after his fleet successfully sailed past two Confederate forts on the Mississippi River.

1864: For the second time in a week, a Confederate force captures a Union wagon train trying to supply the Federal force at Camden, Arkansas.

1898: The United States declares war on Spain.

1915: Australian and New Zealand troops land at Gallipoli in Turkey.

1945: Eight Russian armies completely encircle Berlin, linking up with the U.S. First Army patrol, first on the western bank of the Elbe, then later at Torgau. Germany is, for all intents and purposes, Allied territory.

1952: After a three day fight against Chinese Communist Forces, the Gloucestershire Regiment is annihilated on "Gloucester Hill," in Korea.

1972: Hanois 320th Division drives 5,000 South Vietnamese troops into retreat and traps about 2,500 others in a border outpost northwest of Kontum in the Central Highlands.
