Brief Bio: dob, service, family

Feb 4 1946, Army, Cop, Married to a great woman with one son who decided to follow in dad's footsteps and join the police dept.

Why did you decide to join the Armed Services?

I didn't, my senior year of high school my father asked what my plans were after graduation. He didn't like my answer, so he called the draft board. I had to tell my teacher that I wouldnt be in class because I was going for my pre-induction physical.

Where were you assigned during you tour?

169th Engineers 64B20 Heavy Vehicle Operator.

What was your first assignment?

Basic Ft Jackson South Carolina AIT Ft Jackson SC.

Where did you go next?

Vietnam.

Have any interesting highlights to share?

I was assigned to the honor guard at Baltimore National cemetery where I was personally able to honor our fallen hero's.

What were your most memorable experiences in the military?

Being honored with base soldier of the month at Ft Meade MD. It's amazing what a guy will do for a 2 week pass.

How did you feel about going into combat?

We didnt go into combat....combat came to us, in many different forms. From kids shooting poison darts to your basic RPG and small arms fire ambush.

What was your homecoming like?

I was greeted extremely well by my parents......And thats all I gonna say.

What do you consider your greatest achievements?

Just one, and thats watching my son grow up and follow in the footsteps as his dad, and yes he has the same sick sense of humor.

What are some of the highlights of your life since the war?

After being discharged I rambled up and down the east coast looking for excitement and......more excitement. I finally settled down in Indianapolis. Married, raised a family and did something I never thought I could do.....settle down.

Are you active in veterans' organizations?

Psyco Vets!!!

Do you keep in contact with your military comrades?

Yes.

Are there any messages you would like to communicate to your fellow veterans?

I have met many people in my life. Some nice, many not so nice. but there's something about a vet that stands out above everyone else. To the Vets and Vet supporters I have met here at the Patriot Files....You guys and gals are the greatest!!!! And a special thanks to David and Bernadette for bringing us all together.

This Day in History
1862: Admiral David Farragut captures New Orleans a day after his fleet successfully sailed past two Confederate forts on the Mississippi River.

1864: For the second time in a week, a Confederate force captures a Union wagon train trying to supply the Federal force at Camden, Arkansas.

1898: The United States declares war on Spain.

1915: Australian and New Zealand troops land at Gallipoli in Turkey.

1945: Eight Russian armies completely encircle Berlin, linking up with the U.S. First Army patrol, first on the western bank of the Elbe, then later at Torgau. Germany is, for all intents and purposes, Allied territory.

1952: After a three day fight against Chinese Communist Forces, the Gloucestershire Regiment is annihilated on "Gloucester Hill," in Korea.

1972: Hanois 320th Division drives 5,000 South Vietnamese troops into retreat and traps about 2,500 others in a border outpost northwest of Kontum in the Central Highlands.
