Camp Navistar
The Abdali-Safwan border crossing, is 47 kilometers southwest of Basra. There is a free-trade zone located near Safwan, just inside Iraqi territory. Sprawling across eight square kilometres, the trading zone does brisk business, especially on Fridays when it is jam-packed with shoppers from Iraq looking at the used cars, electronic goods and household items offered by Kuwaiti traders. United Nations observation post N-9 was at the Iraq-Kuwait border at Abdali.

Marines from C Company, 4th LAR Battalion on a road marched from Camp Shoop, Kuwait to Iraq on April 11th 2003. The unit was activated on March 07 2003 out of the Marine Corps Reserve Center, Camp Williams in Riverton Utah.

Camp Navistar (on the Kuwait-Iraq border at Abdali) is among the best around. The sandstorms are tolerable here, the tents have air-conditioning, the food is decent, and it is only about an hour away from Camp Doha, which has everything you could possibly need shopping-wise. The National Guard set a distribution center at Camp Navistar in Iraq, through where most everything destined for troops in Iraq passed by late November 2003.

On 18 April 2003 320th Engineer Company (Corps)(Topo) minus terrain platoon departed Camp Virginia, Kuwait for LSA Anaconda in Northern Iraq on a four-day convoy of all equipment except TSS vans. The Company road marched to CSC Cedar via CSC Navistar along MSR Tampa.

Until 2003, Kuwait?s 187-km frontier with Iraq was sealed with a security belt consisting of an earthen wall, a 10-meter-wide trench and four banks of electric fencing and barbed wire. In the run-up to the war, US forces broke through the security barrier in nine places to create gateways for their troops to enter Iraq. The gates were closed after the war, but it is still possible to walk across.
