1529: Ottoman armies under Suleiman end their siege of Vienna and head back to Belgrade.

1813: During the land defeat of the British on the Thames River in Canada, the Indian chief Tecumseh, now a brigadier general with the British Army (War of 1812), is killed.

1863: The C.S.S. Hunley, the first successful submarine, sinks during a test run, killing its inventor and seven crewmembers.



1880: The warrior Victorio, one of the greatest Apache military strategists of all time, dies this day, under attack from the Mexican army, in the Tres Castillos Mountains south of El Paso, Texas.

1914: Ostend and Zeebrugge are occupied by the Germans.

1915: The Bulgarians bombard Valandova and occupy Vranya.

1916: The British raid Magharah (southern Sinai).

1917: The USS Cassin (DD-43) is torpedoed by the German submarine U-61 off the coast of Ireland.


1917: The Germans cut off the retreat of the Russians from Oesel Island to Moon Island via Mole and capture 3,500 prisoners.

1941: Odessa, a Russian port on the Black Sea which has been surrounded by German troops for several weeks, is evacuated by Russian troops.
