Casting off any part of your freedom to feel safe is like holding your breath to gain fresh air. Freedom is priceless. Once lost, it is difficult to recover.
We the people are the only ones who can ultimately secure our freedoms. We are the soldiers and sailors who stand in the breech during combat. We are the first and last line of defense from a foreign field to our doorsteps. The government is a guide and is meant to facilitate our will not direct us as they see fit. To allow our freedoms to be taken by any goverment, even our own, for any reason is truly a mistake.
What is freedom worth? What about the people who were shackled by the absence of certain constitutional rights during the Civil War. We recovered from that, didn't we? Don't get paranoid folks, freedom does you no good when your flattened by a sky scraper.
I would remind you that when your freedom is restricted, or gone with the wind, your security will be right on its heels. Don't be naive.
The Old Sarge
I guess we have to agree to disagree. Though I am surprised. As a career military man I should think that you would have more faith in the Civilian/military relationship which ties directly into freedom vs. Security. I was only a 4 year vet. I am confident there will be/would be no problems. In fact on the way home from work tonight, I gave the thumbs up signal to an armed national guardsman guarding the approaches to the GW Bridge. I am not being naive. Its called faith in the nation.
