In Aug. of 216BC Hannible employed a tactic called the closed envelope at the battle of Cannae (sp?). General's have been trying to what the big H did ever since. When you fight a battle with 40,000 men, the enemy has 80,000 and it ends with you loosing about 3,000 and they lost 50,000 your talking a great general. Did he win his war, no. Politics, some of us can relate to that.

Ya but Scipio Africanus did a surprise deal and blew his battle horns. That caused Hannibal?s charging war elephants to make an abrupt turn and squish their own infantry. That battle was near Carthage and the end of the line for Hannibal. I?ll bet any ground commander these days would like to match that feat of arms, or feet as it was.

I will put one of the greatest commander as Wei Qiang, a chinese general who lead the Chinese army victory over the Huns, and his nephew Huo Qubang. Both used few soldiers than the army but is able to overcome a larger enemies.
