A ship without Marines is like a garment without buttons. -- Admiral David D. Porter |
Hearts in Conflict: A One-Volume History of the Civil WarAnders combines numerous sources to produce a marvelous and manageable single-volume history of the Civil War, with easy-to-use maps. Relations between the presidents of both sides and their respective generals are emphasized. Almost half the book involves the puzzling George McClellan, who, with his slow progress and constant exaggeration of Lee's forces, may have been the South's best friend in the Union. We also see just how good Lee really was, taking incredible chances in the face of great odds and succeeding.
