Military Quotes

There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell.

-- General William T. Sherman

The Rogue's March

The Rogue's March is one of the best books I have read of late regarding the Mexican War. Rather than go into the war itself, it follows a Mexican Army unit through the war known as the San Patricio Battalion. They were all Irish deserters from the American army with some Polish and German as well. They fought against the US for a variety of reasons, but chief amongst them was the fact that they did not like fighting Mexico which was of the same religion (Catholicism) The nativists of the time had many men in the US Army officer corps and they treated the Irish with great distain because of their religion.

The book chronicles the desertions of the first group led by John Riley and the subsequent desertions of the rest of the group and their battles through the war ending with their capture at Churbrusco. Peter Allen does an excellent job in the research of the unit and writes with an easy, flowing style.

I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the Mexican War as well as US history in general.
